1875 - 2026: 150+ Years of the New West
In 1875, a detachment of the North-West Mounted Police arrived at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers with a vital task: to bring order to the western frontier and establish a fort. What began as a modest timber outpost—named Fort Calgary—would transform into one of North America's most dynamic and prosperous cities.
The settlement grew rapidly with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883, transforming the local economy and cementing Calgary as a vital agricultural and commercial hub. In 1912, visionary promoter Guy Weadick hosted the very first Calgary Stampede, forever entwining the city's identity with the spirit of the Wild West.
Today, Calgary stands as a testament to pioneering ambition, resilience, and economic innovation. The grounds of the Stampede continue to host millions, the downtown core bristles with the headquarters of global energy leaders, and the city thrives as a diverse metropolis of over 1.3 million residents.
